As the feathers grow into full wings, Gabby faces the consequences of being an "angel." To be accepted by his fellow Arab youths, he complies to break into the apartment of his old Russian Jewish neighbor Alexander Zamskoy, who reports him to the police. To avoid being sentenced and deported, Ali is forced to seek out closeness to his enemy. A tragicomic story about friendship and forgiveness. With the help of his temple boy Jak, Ananda travels the canals of the city to unravel the clues and catch the killer. A murder mystery with a karmic payback set in the sealed-off world of Buddhist monkhood. The man and the woman are giving the money away to the poor souls they encounter on the road. Is this a religious fulfillment? A good-will mission? A psychotic gamble? As the car ploughs through the icy terrain, answers become increasingly elusive and tension is built up to an unbearable pitch. When they are arrested, their mother, a Holocaust survivor, has no choice but to reveal that though raised as Catholics, they are in fact Jews. Telling the younger boy they are going to Australia, the land of his fantasies, the family boards a ship to Israel. This tender and humorous drama is based on the filmmaker's own experiences. The Last Christeros tells the valiant story of these soldiers of Christ, the last men standing against the Mexican army, with diminishing food and provisions, as they continue their journey against an arid and forbidding landscape. Back to the list HAPPY HOLIDAYS, by Luca Marvanyi, Israel, 2011, short film, 28' Magda and Yutka, two sisters who have emigrated from Hungary, live in an absorption center in Israel. On the 24th of December, Magda rejects Jutka's request to celebrate Christmas with her, as they did in their childhood. During the day they need to face their mixed identity. Back to the list JAGJEET, by Kavanjit Singh, India, 2011, short film, 14' On 31 October 1984, Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards. According to official figures, around 3000 Sikhs were killed and many more were rendered homeless in the riots which went for the next three days. The film takes a pithy and uncompromising look at the relentless guilt that invariably follows a man - Jagjeet - after he fails to save his best friend from the rioters. One day, a venerable Archimandrite was travelling by boat past the island. When he heard that the fishermen were thought to be holy wonder-workers, he decided to see them with his own eyes. Finding out that they did not even know the Our Father prayer, he started to teach them how to pray. You will be surprised to see the result... Back to the list A PLACE OF HER OWN, by Sigal Emanuel, Israel, 2011, doc, 68' The shocking story of Reut, a Jewish homeless girl, who at the age of 17 had her first son, taken away by the welfare authorities and placed in a Jewish settler foster family. While she struggles to regain custody of her son, Reut marries a Palestinian man, moves to his village and gives birth to two more children. All Reut really wants is a place of her own and some peace of mind, but her life is full of turnabouts, right up to its tragic end. Back to the list BETWEEN TWO WORLDS, by Ovidio Salazar, UK, 2012, doc, 75' The life of Muhammad Knut Bernstrom was one epitomised by sincerity, spiritual struggle and the search for inner peace. After a spell as the Swedish Ambassador to Morocco, Bernstrom realised his place was to be found in Islam. His decision in later life to 'interpret' the Qur'an for Swedish readers gave a whole generation of Muslims growing up in Sweden a new connection with their religion. It also tries to tell the point of view of the supporters of Mubarak who in those days tried to stop - also through violence - the protesters. Whether it's discrimination or not, he feels that he has to defend himself because of it. Cap or Kippah is about a child living in two worlds. In the one, he prefers to cover up the fact that he's Jewish, in the other he comes clean about it. As he passes through picturesque German Rhineland, Jonathan explores matters of faith, politics, and memory, inspired by - and inspiring - those he meets along the way. He is also a troubadour, singing and playing the instrument he's made himself. It's the 14th time that he walks 800 kilometers from Barcelona to Santiago de Compostela, and then to 'the end of the world', to Finisterra. Will this pilgrimage change him? Back to the list GORELOVKA-EPISODES FROM THE LIFE OF A DISAPPEARING COMMUNITY, by Alexander Kviria, Georgia, 2010, doc, 48' The village of Gorelovka is located in Southern Georgia. Doukhobors (Spirit-wrestlers), a group of Russian religious dissidents anarchist and pacifist beliefs, founded it in the mid 19th century. They managed to keep their identity and traditions throughout the Soviet period. However, under political and economical pressure, many Doukhobors have now left Georgia and their heritage is disappearing with the last inhabitants. Back to the list GUNNAR GOES GOD, by Gunnar Hall Jensen, Norway, 2011, doc, 86' Despite enjoying a well-ordered Scandinavian middle-class life, Gunnar feels a growing emptiness inside. Having too much of everything, and little of nothing. Searching for a deeper meaning he sets off to a Christian monastery in the middle of the Egyptian desert. Gunnar Goes God is a personal, playful and unpolished documentary about spiritual longing and middleclass boredom. During the Second World War, their lives were saved first by their aunt, later by another young Christian woman who would become their mothers. But all this remained hidden for almost six decades. Now, at the age of 70, Avner decides to take Itzik on a journey to piece together the incredible story of their survival and most important to deeply connect with the pain and loss of their three mothers. One of them is not destined to experience the full hermitic solitude, the other one lacks consistency to completely separate himself from the world. Grzegorz lived his secluded life for 15 years, until Grzegorz arrived. They don't like each other. They are condemned to each other.
